Common Misconceptions About Learning Music

Learning Music

While academics and careers are highly prioritised in Singapore, more individuals are starting to realise the importance of extracurricular activities outside of school and work. This reflects a broader understanding of the value of cultivating well-roundedness. Learning music is one such pursuit that has grown in popularity. It offers a myriad of benefits from enhancing cognitive abilities such as memory, problem-solving, and concentration to fostering emotional expression and stress relief. However, certain myths surrounding the topic may discourage some from enrolling in music lessons. In this article, we share some common misconceptions about learning music and shed light on the truth to help you make a more informed decision.

Myth 1: Learning Music Is Too Expensive

The prevailing belief is that music education requires enrolling in premium music schools, purchasing costly instruments, and investing in private lessons or specialised training, making it inaccessible to those with limited financial means. But, that is far from the truth. Though certain aspects of music education can indeed incur expenses, learning music on a budget is made possible with numerous affordable alternatives. For instance, community centres in Singapore may offer subsidised music programmes, and online resources such as tutorials, sheet music and instructional videos are cost-effective or even free avenues for learning music at one’s own pace. Second-hand instruments are also often available at lower prices and group classes or workshops can be more economical than individual lessons.

At The Music Shed, we engage only qualified professional music educators and ensure course fees are kept at competitive prices, empowering long-term musical success and affordability. Our music school in Singapore provides one-to-one trial lessons too, allowing you to experience the instrument, evaluate our services, and assess the quality of lessons before making any commitment!

Myth 2: I’m Too Old to Start Learning Music

Old Person Learning Music

There is no denying that starting music at a young age can be beneficial in terms of flexibility and adaptability. Children have this advantage due to their greater neuroplasticity and ability to absorb new information and skills compared to adults. Nonetheless, this should not deter you from pursuing your musical passions! Music knows no age and adults bring a wealth of life experience, patience and dedication to learning that children might otherwise lack. With consistent practice and commitment, adults are fully capable of mastering musical instruments and achieving proficiency. In fact, many renowned musicians started their music journeys later in life.

Our music school firmly believes in classes for all ages and levels. To date, our youngest student is 4, and our oldest is 72! Instructors will tailor lessons to a pace that is progressively challenging for each student, in order to develop their potential to the fullest.

Myth 3: Music is Only for the Naturally Talented

The adage ‘practice makes perfect’ certainly rings true in the world of music. While some individuals may have a predisposition or early exposure, proficiency is primarily developed through dedicated practice, guidance and perseverance. Talent can only take you so far, especially as you progress to more challenging stages. Countless musicians, from beginners to virtuosos have honed their skills through years of hard work and commitment rather than relying solely on innate talent. Moreover, music offers a diverse range of styles and genres, enabling students to find their own unique expression regardless of perceived talent. Overcoming myths about talent in music, our music school acknowledges that anyone with the passion and determination to learn can unlock their music potential and revel in the joy and fulfilment that music brings.

Biases and ignorance often lead to misconceptions about different topics, which is why doing your own research is so crucial. By debunking these music learning myths, we hope that we have provided greater clarity on the subject and encouraged you to take the first step towards your musical journey!
